And in order to bring some light to the lower level, they installed two panels of Plexiglas in the floor. The former printing factory is now a bright, unique, art-filled home for this family of five.

Love the industrial feel of the reclaim wood against the subway tiles. Eat Drink Americano, Los Angeles (photo from Dustjacket Attic).
I am also very drawn to the industrial interiors of the gastropubs and retail stores that are popping up all over downtown LA. Reclaimed wood, wrought iron, subway tiles with dark grout, concrete, pre rinse faucets, and vintage filament light bulbs are characteristic of this style.

After measuring the space, he laid the pallets where he wanted the deck to be. Starting with the first row, Kevin lined up all gaps and used pavers to level and support the pallets. He then cut strips from 8-foot plywood to fill in the gaps and then nailed them into place and secured them to the neighboring pallets. After treating with water resistant stain, the deck was done. When all was said and done, it cost under $100.

We love radiators here at the RA and unfortunately went so far as using the term “Radiator Porn” in a post (what were we thinking?).
It looks like Apartment Therapy does too – check out their DIY radiator resuscitator article.

Anyone disenchanted with their radiator should consider a paint job.

The island, made from fallen oak and a hand-carved and painted cherry log, achieves a lot of things at once: it’s both a breakfast island (with room for two people on stools, their legs swinging in the open space underneath the counter) and a cooking and prep area.

Really wonderful article on Apartment Therapy about wood fireplace surrounds.

One trend we’ve noticing is wood not only inside the fireplace, but on the outside, too. From slick matchbooked panels to reclaimed boards, wood fireplace surrounds are something we’re really warming up to.

Doub transformed her once run-of-the-mill garage in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia into a free-spirited space that screams fun, resourcefulness and a serious sense of style. The unassuming exterior and the raw interiror is what attracted her to the space and she was able to see a diamond in the rough.

The Great Company has a great space!

The original wood flooring from 1906. The floors had been painted over several times during its century of use, so we had to sand-blast the floors then sand them over twice. Then we used three coats of water-based varnish to bring out its elegance. The sanding took three weeks (we just projected one week), and our exhausted contractor shared with us that in over 20 years of contract work, he had never worked with wood of such fine quality. It still amazes us as we step on these floors each day.

Holy smokes – I was worried! Go check out this amazing photo transformation of a Victorian on Apartment Therapy.

After: admit it. You were worried when you saw that bit about ‘modernizing,’, right? Marie Clare and Peter have struck the perfect balance with a renovation that lightens and modernizes the space, while still remaining true to the home’s original character. Gone are the dark trim, the yellow walls, and the Victorian room divider, but it’s what they did keep that matters: the original tin ceiling, the crown molding, the fireplace, all speak to the home’s past.

Apartment Therapy has a great post on shopping responsibly. The only step we would add is “Shop Reclaimed”. Otherwise they nailed it – go see.

Events like the recent disaster at a garment factory in Bangladesh, which killed more than a thousand workers, are a sobering reminder that in a global economy, the purchasing decisions you make can have an impact not just on your wallet, but on the lives of people all over the world. Here are a few suggestions to help you buy things that are not just good for your home, but good for the world we all live in.
Buying stuff that has been there all along is one of the best choices you can make for the environment and the world. It’s also a great way to save money, and pick up a unique piece that you won’t see in anyone else’s home.

Apartment Therapy is featuring a post on a lovely remodel – here’s a taste.

During the renovation I scoured Craigslist to find a clawfoot tub, an old farmhouse sink and pedestal sinks, and went to salvage stores for doors and door knobs. I took a carpentry class to learn to build furniture and made most of ours, from our kitchen table to living room floor-to-ceiling bookcase. Our house has become an incredible home, a place to share meals and stories.
