Inspired by the imperative weight reduction in airplane construction, Bench32 was chosen for its use of Fusion 360’s simulation capabilities to both ideate and render the design. The repetition of 32 wooden spars forms the seating surface, which is held together by 80 metal parts. Reusing parts multiple times and aligning the elements with ample negative space creates a lightweight appearance that results in a sturdy yet lightweight bench comprised of FSC-certified wood or Cradle to Cradle Certified Accoya wood.

My friends often ask me what I would like to do for a living, maybe because I complain about the jobs I currently do. If ever there was a post that nailed my dream job it is this one. With the caveat that I would be driving the 1968 El Camino instead of cutting it apart to make a bench!
Artist Colin Selig makes benches for municipal buildings and parks — and, of course, for rich people’s private courtyards, because a guy’s gotta eat — out of recycled propane tanks and car parts. The bench above is made from a 1968 El Camino.

Craftsman primitivist barnwood bench. Solid wood construction. Old growth Douglas fir salvaged from an island barn in the north Puget Sound.
The seat is cut from 2 x 10 dimensional Douglas fir. The top is planed to reveal the figure and color of the wood. A single hand-rubbed coat of locally produced tung oil preserves the wood with minimal inflection of natural tone. The board’s rugged, roughsawn origins have been preserved on the top’s underside.
The top’s ends are tapered to give the bench lift. The smoothness of the tapered ends also comes through when you pick up the bench.
