Reclaimed barnwood coffee table, modern industrial style

This table uses some really nice reclaimed beech that we get from tobacco barns being torn down in the mid-south. The wood was originally used for roof rafters and your table may just have the nail holes to prove it. Beech is a great looking wood… full of reclaimed character and just as hard as oak or maple. I love working with beech because it was never widely used as a building material in this country and therefore does not turn up every day in the reclaimed world. Before the advent of the chainsaw beech was often considered too hard to cut down so it was largely ignored as a building material. Thus it is far less common than oak, fir and pine when it comes to reclaimed material.

Inhabitat – Dairy Barn Transformed into Gorgeous LEED Silver Design and Technology Center on SUNY Campus

SUNY Morrisville State College has a new LEED Silver work center, transformed from a historic arched agricultural building. Designed by Perkins Eastman Architects, the adaptive reuse project has created an open and airy space for the Center for Design and Technology. The former dairy barn was a recognizable symbol on the college’s campus, and is now the symbol of the college’s commitment to sustainability.
