People left the borough, properties were condemned and Centralia is now one of the weirdest abandoned towns and cities in America. Steam and smoke rise from cracks in a now-disused stretch of Pennsylvania’s Route 61 as the mining fire continues to smoulder.

For two decades Doel’s remaining residents have been embroiled in a battle with a state-funded corporation that is seeking to raze it. The townspeople also have the EU’s strict environmental laws on their side thanks to the large population of swallows that has taken up residence in the dilapidated town. But they also have something else working in their favor: street art.
Urban Ghosts is a great site for abandoned stories. This one about Kennecott mines in Alaska is poignant.
The last load of copper ore left Kennecott by train on November 10, 1938. The following day the abandoned mining camp was declared a ghost town, and is now a national historic monument.
