In a stellar example of upcycling, Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architecture has created a breezy modern home in Cloverdale, California by extensively reusing wood from the 1970s kit log house that had stood on the site before. In a statement to Freshome, the architects explain that “all of the interior and exterior wood paneling, trim, and decking were milled down from the logs of the original kit house.” And the result is quite nice.
This photo of the summer kitchen at the Hoke House in Spring Grove was taken on New Year’s Day. It is slated to be torn down next week, and Paul Nevin has asked Rutter’s Farm Stores if some of the salvageable pieces can be saved. (Submitted)
He thought it was a frame structure until earlier this week when more clapboards were removed from the building. It revealed old logs underneath, and Nevin believes the summer kitchen dates to the early 1800s.

Paul Davis Restoration of Rome and Cave Spring will begin carefully deconstructing the Cherokee log cabin from the old Green Hotel structure that has surrounded it since the mid 1800s. Clint Maynard of PDR, who supervised the skinning of the cabin in July 2010, will direct the project.
