At construction’s peak, deconstruction movement burgeons | mndaily.com – The Minnesota Daily

Now, an initiative led by Minneapolis City Council members Andrew Johnson and Linea Palmisano is addressing housing demolition waste and drafting a deconstruction policy due next spring.

The plan specifically cites Wards 13 and 3 as high demolition areas in 2013, the latter of which encompasses parts of the University area.

Deconstruction is new to the Twin Cities, and one Minneapolis social enterprise called Better Futures Minnesota is leading the charge. It offers work crews for hire to provide deconstruction services, property maintenance, appliance recycling, groundskeeping and more. But off the clock, the men who work at Better Futures also get help with housing, healing and recovery, and personal coaching — helping these formerly incarcerated or homeless men turn their lives around.

A demolition boom is upon us, and we have a choice as a community. Demolish and send it to the dump, or deconstruct for less money, less waste and more green jobs.

Deconstructing old buildings – Craigs List Minneapolis

This popped up in my inbox today. It’s an general labor ad from the Minneapolis Craig’s List.

I have two points on this solicitation:

1. Deconstructing buildings is dangerous, you should have construction experience especially if you are required to be on roof tops.

2. Four years ago the starting wage for deconstructionists was $12.50 and that included benefits where I worked (a nonprofit).
