Reclaimed Pecan and Pine Wood Table – Jason Shrader

Jason Shrader 3

This years Impact Learning Center Luau and Silent Auction is quickly approaching (May 11 in Scottsboro, Al) and several people have asked about the item that I’ll be donating this year.

Inspired by a salvaged pecan log, some used electrical braces, and a piece of barn wood , this is what I was able to build. The tops are from the pecan log, sawed to a 2″ thickness on my chain saw mill, and then planed smooth. There were several areas that were prone to splitting so I added a few “bow ties”.

The legs were milled from pine braces often used on power poles to hold the wires. I love working with this pine as it is usually quarter sawn, it cleans up great and is normally dead straight.

The stiles were milled from some hickory barn wood that I had saved at some point (although I cannot recall now where it came from).

The piece was then finished with a clear lacquer finish which was then hand rubbed with pumice and rottenstone powder. Finally I buffed out the finish with a furniture polish to help achieve a mirror like finish.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the piece.

Speaking of pretty things made from wood, this table/stool called Beam from Holler Design is really lovely. The hand-charred finish is excellent, and the way the three pieces of reclaimed pine fit together is simple but beautiful. If you’re looking for some well-made side tables/stools, click here to check these out in more detail. Thanks to Katie Vance for the tip! xo, grace
