Fender releases limited edition reclaimed wood guitars

Fender's Special Edition Reclaimed Wood guitars

Fender has soft-launched a Special Edition series of guitars aimed at players looking for the distinct tone of old growth timber, while enjoying the benefits of modern features and hardware. The company has secured a limited amount of reclaimed wood from obscure locations in the US for an interesting take on its iconic Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. The redwood model is made using wood from the 1930s, and the pine models timber dates back to 1868 … and you don’t get much more vintage than that.

As California’s wine industry continues to grow, vintners are searching for suitable areas to grow grapes outside of the valleys and closer to the coast. But Spanish winemaker Artesa Vineyards and Winery is taking this quest too far with plans to destroy 154 acres of coastal redwoods and Douglas firs to make space for new grapevines. With one study indicating that areas suitable for vineyards in the world’s major wine-producing regions could shrink between 19 and 73 percent by 2050, it’s likely that the situation will get worse before it gets better.

Contact Sierra Club’s Redwood Chapter to see how you can help stop this.

RECLAMATION The floor and interior of Pininfarina’s Cambiano concept car is trimmed in briccole oak reclaimed from the barber poles along the Venice lagoon. Jerry Garrett

Reclaimed woods are taking center stage in high-end automotive interiors; the short-lived Fisker Karma, a high-end plug-in hybrid, offered trim of either white oak reclaimed from logs retrieved from the depths of Lake Michigan or charred redwood from California forest fires. Bentley repurposes slabs cut from stumps of walnut trees. Even the latest-generation Ram trucks has joined the trend, offering thick chunks of door, dashboard and steering wheel trim crafted from old fence posts.

Pininfarina’s most recent concept car, the BMW Gran Lusso Coupe, has accents crafted from 2,000-year-old kauri logs dredged from a New Zealand swamp.
