Salvaged materials exhibit opens at Appalachian Center for Craft | Tennessee Tech University

Salvaged materials artist Chris Bowman’s exhibit, “Surface and Repurpose,” continues at the Tennessee Tech University Appalachian Center for Craft through Nov. 3.

Located in Gallery Two, the exhibit is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

Bowman’s work is inspired by his surroundings in the Midwest region. Local farm crops and architecture influence his imagery and materials. Bowman is restoring an 1864 farm home from which he uses many salvaged materials to create his sculptural pieces.

“In my work, I use straightforward forms. The wood is shaped, textured and painted to add a contemporary dimension to the piece,” he said. “At times, compartments or drawers are added which are more suggestive of function than for practical use.”

Bowman is a graduate of Heron School of Art with a bachelor of fine arts degree in furniture making. He resides outside Indianapolis.
