Fruit Reuse – its better than it sounds!
Seriously, here at The Reclamation Administration we are BIG fans of the what the Portland Fruit Tree Project does. If you are not from Portland, Oregon you should really read up on the great work they do and model it in your own town. If you are from Portland, give some please. *Thanks*
What they do: Bring hundreds of people together to harvest 40,000-plus pounds of fruit each year from trees around the city. Half of the fruit goes to families in need through local food pantries and half goes to harvest participants, 50 percent of whom are on low incomes. PFTP also teaches workshops on tree care and food preservation, helps owners care for their trees and manages community orchards on public lands.
How you can help: Register your tree(s) and share your fruit; donate pruning tools, folding tables, office supplies, a digital projector or raffle/auction items.
Testimonial: “Portland Fruit Tree Project gives neighbors the chance to build community, provide fresh produce to those in need, and keep thousands of pounds of fruit from going to waste in yards across Portland.… PFTP makes the most of every volunteer, every dollar and every fruit tree!” —Gwenn B., community orchard volunteer
