Hanes Vintage & Salvage — The Thrill of the Hunt…and Monster Centipedes

Picture of reclaimed wood

Today, we didn’t know for sure until 8:00 a.m. that our salvage operation was a “go.” But we finally got the green light and closed in on a 156 year old adobe in Old Town Albuquerque. The owners were renovating and had recycled all of the original beams, flooring and other items they could. They called us in to haul away the rest because they hated to throw it away. And we would have hated for them to throw it away, too.

It’s not every day you come across 156 year old lumber. The pile included planks, beams, and old oak tongue-and-groove flooring. Wouldn’t it have been terrible if that wonderful wood had wound up in a landfill? A tragedy!

Luckily, we were able to salvage all of this great wood. Being selfish, we plan to reclaim a lot of this wood for our own projects. But some of it may also wind up available to the public. We’ll keep you posted as we get this fantastic reclaimed wood sorted and graded.

In addition to the wood, we were able to salvage some fabulous rusted corrugated tin. This stuff is perfect for rustic garden projects. We’re going to use some of it as facing on a pair of large planters we’re building. We also got some old galvanized roofing corners that would make great projects, and some other interesting odds and ends.

Performing salvage operations like this isn’t without potential hazards. Check out this monster centipede that crawled out from under a piece of corrugated tin while we were working. It measured at least six inches in length. The granddaddy of centipedes!

At the end of the day, we were so happy these clients called us. They needed the wood and other scrap hauled away to make room for a patio. We were pleased to do the hauling and help keep this wonderful wood out of the landfill.

We all scrambled for a second when this centipede crawled out from under a piece of corrugated tin we were salvaging!
