Demolition work at the University of Sheffield’s Social Sciences building was brought to a halt for two hours after a resident sat in a camping chair on the site in protest against the “deafening” noise levels.
Imploding the building was an option but considered too risky to public safety.
“You can’t put a dollar value on health and safety.” Deconstruction was a more conservative option but the company did not want to end up in court if demolition caused problems.
“There is no give up,” Murrah said. “When you got this kind of beauty build somewhere else. It’s that simple.”

She added that air-quality samples are taken on a regular basis, and that Canada Lands will be sharing the results with the principal. The demolition is now half complete, according to Millier, with an expected wrap-up date in mid-April. The deconstructed materials, besides coming down, need to be removed from the site as well. The demolition has been slowed as contractors dispose of asbestos, lead-based paint and mould found in the roughly 40 buildings on the property.
