Naturally, there is a bit more to it. Pop-Up Repair is part of a larger, multidisciplinary inquiry surrounding the practice of repair. Sandra Goldmark, co-founder of Pop-Up Repair, is an assistant professor of design with the Barnard College Department of Theatre. She received Barnard’s Presidential Research Award to expand the research component of the project over the next two years.

The venture examines American culture and habits of waste from a number of angles, incorporating elements from the arts, the sustainability movement, community organizations, and small business. It proposes one possible driver of change: repair. A specific research goal was to assess the impact of the reintroduction of a small “fix-it” shop into an economically diverse and socially close-knit Manhattan neighborhood.
